Education paths for becoming an Interior Design Professional

If you are artistic and enjoy working with others, and also want the security of a steady income, you might well consider a career in interior design. Interior design careers include an interesting variety of professions that range far beyond the traditional pursuits of home décor. Today’s interior designers may work for event planners, theaters, casinos, department stores, or even museums – anywhere that a three-dimensional living space needs to be created or simulated.

If you go the traditional route of becoming an interior decorator after graduating from interior design school, you can choose between the independent lifestyle of consulting or the more predictable environment of a large firm. Independent designers enjoy flexible hours and the ability to pick and choose their clients, but the downside is the responsibility of small business management. Employees of large firms need to be able to work well in a team, and may have to serve as apprentices before achieving true project ownership.

Regardless of your focus, you are likely to find a satisfying profession in which the fruits of your labor are visible to all. It is a great pleasure to take the rooms in which people live from a simple sketch through a series of formal blueprints and a handful of fabric swatches to a living, breathing environment in which they can thrive.
